Each spring, Strings Welcome Spring, a special benefit concert performed by the students of Trudy Larson, has entertained music lovers on the North Shore and Merrimack Valley, performing concerts to sponsor Haitian children. The concert, now in its seventeenth year, raises money for children in Haiti in conjunction with local non-profit, Partners in Development. The mission of the concert has always been children helping children.
The hour and a half concert contains of a variety of classical and folk music featuring large ensembles, quintets, quartets and solos. The concert is a great tradition among the students and is an important part of the students training. “They have the opportunity to perform in a wonderful concert while using their talents to help someone less fortunate than themselves. Music lessons are a wonderful gift which needs to be passed along,” said Trudy Larson. “The students love to perform and this gives them a worthwhile purpose.”
Funds raised go to Partners in Development (PID), a charitable organization based in Ipswich, which has worked in Haiti and Guatemala for the past twenty years, running sponsorship programs for children, providing microloans to families to start small businesses, and helping to build homes for some of the poorest families in the area. Over the last twenty years, PID has served over 6,000 people in both countries through its programs, and in the aftermath of the earthquake, has helped roughly 5,000 citizens of Haiti with medical and other aid.
